Westercon 64 on-site registration is open this morning. The Dealers’ Room and Art Show open to the members at Noon. Anime Programming started last night and continues through Monday. The Hospitality Suite in 1905 will be open daily from 10 AM.
The first program item of the convention is the Opening Ceremonies at Noon in the California Room. Main Programming then begins and runs throughout the day and into the night through Monday.
This evening’s major events include the Meet the Guests Reception in Regency Ballroom I at 7:30 PM and the first of two Regency Dances in Regency Ballrooom II, also at 7:30 PM.
Things are under way here at the Fairmont San José We hope you’ll join us! There are still hotel rooms available at the convention rate, so it’s not even too late to come and spend a night or three in the hotel.
Although the Bay Area had an unseasonable rain storm earlier this week, the weather forecast for the July 1-4 weekend is for hot temperatures into the high 90°s (mid-30°s C). Westercon takes place entirely in one building: the Fairmont San José. Access to the Fairmont’s pool deck makes booking a hotel room an even better bargain. Attend the convention functions in air-conditioned comfort and take a break with a dip in the pool.
Convention registration opens Thursday afternoon and some convention functions like Anime Programming and the Hospitality Suite will also be open that evening, the night before the convention’s formal opening on Friday. Come early and join the fun!
There are still hotel rooms available at the Fairmont for the weekend of Westercon, despite any rumors to the contrary. We encourage anyone attending Westercon to enhance their convention experience by staying in the hotel where you can have easy access to evening events and programming and the parties that are a part of traditional fannish culture.
If you have any difficulty booking a room, including having the reservation tell you that one of the “shoulder nights” (before and after the convention) is unavailable, write to our Hotel Liaison (email@example.com) with details and we’ll get it resolved as soon as possible.
Also, if you booked a room by any way other than through the PassKey web site or by calling the hotel and mentioning Westercon, please let our hotel liasion know so that our convention gets appropriate credit for your stay. Part of our commitment to the hotel is that we fill a certain number of hotel room nights, so it’s important we get credit for every convention member staying at the hotel.
For those of you driving to Westercon 64, note that there is no free parking in downtown San José and that the hotel’s parking garage is valet parking-only (no self parking) for $26/day. There is plenty of available parking in downtown San José, however, including both surface lots suitable for taller vehicles and parking garages, all of which are close to the hotel. See our Parking page for more details.
We’ve posted a map of our planned function room assignments on the Hotel Map page.
Most of Westercon 64′s functions will be on the second floor, including convention Registration, which will be in the Market Street Foyer (take the escalators from the lobby). Some Programing and special events like Girl Genius Radio Theatre will be in the Club Regent room on the ground floor near the hotel’s Lobby Bar.
Note that the function rooms on second floor are arranged as a hollow square, so if you keep walking around the halls here, you will eventually come back to where you started. Some people have found this confusing, but it does mean that if you take the elevators or the First Street stairs on your way to register, it doesn’t matter whether you turn left or right, because it’s the same distance either way to Registration on the opposite side of the first floor.
We are not using any of the hotel’s function rooms in the south tower. All functions will be in the main tower.
If you’ve haven’t already booked your room at the Fairmont, we strongly urge you to book your room as soon as possible, so that we can help guarantee you the convention room rate. After our hotel room block expires, we cannot guarantee our convention rate.
Also, we have heard that some people are having problems with booking shoulder nights such as the Thursday night before the convention. If you run into this problem or any other booking problem, please book your Friday through Sunday (or later) stay and then write to firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll promptly help you work with the hotel to get the rest of your nights booked in.
Although Westercon 64 is not operating a hotel roommate-matching service, we have put up a Room Sharing page where persons looking for a room-sharing arrangement can post comments offering or asking for a room match. Of course, Westercon 64 takes no responsibility for any room-sharing arrangements made through our website or elsewhere, and individuals are responsible for their own hotel arrangements.
Fan-run social gatherings (“room parties” in fan-speak) are among the great established traditions of SF conventions. If you’re interested in hosting a room party at Westercon 64, check out our Parties page for information you need to know before hosting a party.
Before making your hotel reservation for Westercon 64, you may want to sign up for the Fairmont President’s Club frequent-traveler program (it’s free), because FPC members get free in-room internet. Internet connectivity (wi-fi) will not be available in the function rooms or hallway areas. See our Internet Access page for more details.
The Fairmont Hotel is now accepting reservations. See our hotel page for details or click here to make your reservation now.
Please note that due to an event happening just before Westercon, we have very few hotel rooms on the nights before the convention. If you are planning on combining a vacation with your trip to Westercon, we recommend planning it for after Westercon, not before.
If you have any questions or problems with your hotel reservation, please contact our Hotel Liaison at hotel [at] westercon64.org.
